What is The Farm Team Advisor Program?
The Farm Team Advisor Program is a select group of artists or managers coached by The Artist Farm co-founder Ben Coe. Ben will serve as your coach and mentor in building a more successful, profitable music business through bi-weekly, one-on-one, hour-long phone calls with you or a couple members of your band.
Who is it for?
The Farm Team is open to up-and-coming musicians or managers looking for a more holistic approach to uncovering their vision and putting plans in place to build the vision. Most importantly you must be serious about growing your business/career.
If you are an artist/manager with a fully developed career and you are “stuck” or are looking for life/business coaching please visit Ben’s coaching business site: http://www.bencoe.com/coaching/
How much money do you have to be making to qualify?
As long as you feel the drive to build a better life/business, it doesn’t matter how much you make. I work with artists that are creating bands and haven’t made a dollar yet and I work with nationally touring, financially sustainable businesses.
Who coaches me?
My name is Ben Coe. I am the co-founder of The Artist Farm and I will be your coach. I have 10+ years of experience in all aspects of the industry including booking, record labels, festivals, theaters, night clubs, business management, and management. What I enjoy most is teaching, mentoring, and coaching for business and life.
If we haven’t met yet, then let me throw a few more credentials your way.
- I have worked on the management teams of 15+ bands, many of which gross well over $1M annually (Yonder Mountain String Band, John Butler Trio, North Mississippi Allstars, Los Lobos, Squirrel Nut Zippers, Melissa Ferrick, DubConscious, Infamous Stringdusters, That 1 Guy, Charlie Hunter, and many others) and worked at Lookout Records (where GreenDay and Operation Ivy started). Prior to starting my own company I worked for Red Light Management.
- I created a unique tour marketing system and authored an e-book called “Squeezing the Show” that documents the process. The book has been downloaded over 5000 times and received rave reviews.
- I write about our unique, open approach to artist business on our blog.
- I believe in using music to create goodness in the world. And I see business as a tool to do this as well. I recently launched The Clean Concert Pledge to help keep concert grounds trash free. This has received over 900 signatures to date.
Why am I doing this?
I love music for what it brings to the world. I love artists and art-businesses for choosing the unconventional and seemingly risky path in life. I also found in managing bands that my favorite aspect was a weekly call during which I would coach, teach, and mentor the artists as business owners. I put these interests together and created a new service – The Farm Team.
As you know, most bands (and businesses in general) never make it past the early stages simply because the owners didn’t have a good plan and weren’t committed. This is where the coach comes in to help you blaze your trail toward success.
What you can expect:
- You will belong to a small group of artists who have decided and committed to making a successful music business career.
- You will be expected to work diligently and intelligently on growing your business. Your interests and questions will drive our agenda. Together we will work on clarifying your vision, establishing goals, and accomplishing them.
- I will not do the work for you. You must recognize your role as business owner and learn to run it efficiently and effectively. No one is going to save you or make you successful. You do that. I can help.
- You should not expect that I will provide you with connections. This may happen naturally in our conversations, but your intention should not be to hire me so I can get you an “in” at a record label or agency.
How does it work?
Every other week we will have a regularly scheduled, one-on-one (or with a couple members from the group) phone call for an hour each.
As part of the coaching, there may be weeks where I will have exercises for you to work on. Some will be foundation work and some will be business process exercises.
What is the cost and commitment?
My goal is to get you to the point of having a successful business (as you define it).
There is no such thing as an overnight success- the process of building your career takes time. Most coaching relationships last for several months. Some clients have stayed with us for much longer and are still with us now as management clients. Ideally I am looking to coach artists that see this as an opportunity to build a relationship and a stunning career. I am not looking for an artist who wants a quick fix.
The cost is $200 per month and you will be billed on a monthly basis. I’d like you to see that this is a great deal for what you get. If you feel this is expensive, let me put out a few points of perspective:
- Consider that regular management would be a minimum of 15% of gross revenue. If you are grossing just $40,000 per year that would be $6000 in commissions. This is a bargain at $2400 for the year.
- Each week you are getting a seasoned professional who is still actively working in the management business. You get to talk with me personally, one-on-one for 1 hour. Even regular management doesn’t necessarily provide this.
- My goal is to give you way more perspective than you can get on your own and thus provide you with a superior value – to help you build a more successful business from a solid foundation.

Feedback
It is so easy to get clouded and loose focus in an industry full of lies, hype and broken promises. Your own ambition can be just as misleading. Dave and I love Ben because he brings a consistent clarity to the table every time, and after our meetings we always know which way is forward.
